Default Grommet's and Adenoids.

Ok sorry if tis is in the wrong place but could not see were else to put it.

My five year old is having his adeniods removed and grommets put in on the 2nd July. Does anyone have any advice about this? How do you prepare a child for an operation? How long before do you start to speak to him about it? Did you find that your child had any pain afterwards and how long did it last for? Anything else that you think that I might need to do or know etc...?

My eldest son had a squint operation on his eye when he was 5. I was just very honest with him but phrased things so that he would understand. I think I told him all about it a couple of days before he had to go for his pre-op, and so he wasn't anxious about it and by the time he went in for his surgery he'd already seen the ward and met some nurses.
Not sure about pain and stuff for what your son is having done, hopefully somebody else here will be able to help. Good luck though!

My cousin had the adenoids and grommets, but sorry I can't remember anything about it Debi how did yours get on with the squint operation? Melissa might have to have something done in later life.

Squint op was absolutley fine and has worked 100% - you wouldn't even be able to tell what eye it was, but they reckon doing it between 5-6 is the best age (I think Cameron was 2 months off his 6th birthday).
The only thing that really upset me (but don't let it put you off) was the blood. I am not a squemish person at all, but no-body told me it would bleed (I guess you don't assosiate the eye with blood really, but it does actually make sense). When I went to see him in recovery it was a bit of a breath taker but it was absolutely fine, just wish somebody had forwarned me as I like to know every detail of what I'm dealing with.

All 3 of my boys have had surgery for one thing or another! - Cameron at 5 years, Stanley at 5 weeks and Henry at 16 months! And Millie doesn't even get ill! She's never caught anything that goes round (chicken pox, german measles, flu bugs and tummy upsets). If I could bottle her immune system and sell it I'd make an absolute fortune! hahaha!
