Default Has anyone got a child with diabetes

My nine year old son kieran has type one diabetes he has had it since he was 2 and a half. He went to a great nursery school who were brilliant with him but since he started school we have had nothing but problems.
I have had to change him schools 3 times due to the staff and there ignorance of diabetes and the school nurse is not much help its not as though my son is the only person with it in the school coz there is a few kids with it myself and his nurse have been to the school many times to tell them what to do and he has a care plan but they always seem to leave my son when he is having a really bad hypo i have lost count of how many times an ambulance has been called coz he has got that bad or that 1 of this friends has had to treat him or tell the teacher what to do.

am sorry for going on but it makes me so angry i would love to here from anyone who has a child with it or has had the same problems. nicola

Yes he is on insulin he was put on three injections a day at the begining of the year this control of it is brilliant at home but have problems at school when he was younger they always forgot to give him his snacks. I got call from the school a few weeks ago to say that he was having a hypo and could i come to the school when i got there he was in the reception having a fit all by himself they had not even given him hypo stop or lucozade. i can not understand how an adult can standby and do nothing when a child is like that even if they called an ambulance they would have told them what to do. I know it scary it still scares the hell out of me when he is like that.

thats so terrible, personally i think teachers should go on a course, and know how to treat diabetics, ashma people, epelipsy , etc so they know wot to do in such cases !! is there nothing you can do like take it further at the end of the day, your son should not been left alone !! you should take it further and prehaps it wont happen again. its so annoying, half the teachers these days dont know wot there doing!!

As soon as it happened i got in touch with his nurse and we have been to a meeting at the school AGAIN if this happens again we have said we are taking it further and if necessary i will go to my local newspaper.( we went through what to do and did another care plan) I think you are right that they should have training there are so any children that suffer from diabetes ect and i think the school nurse should be included in this the only thing she is good for is looking for nits
