Premature Baby Cardigan Knitting Pattern
Materials: 1 x 50g ball Debbie Bliss or Cygnet DK yarn, 1 pair 4mm needles (USA6), 1 pair 3.25mm needles, 4 buttons, Tapestry Needle
Abbreviations: alt =alternative, beg = beginning, cms = centimetres, cont = continue, dec = decrease, foll = following, inc = increase(ing), k = knit, m1 = wrap yarn round needle, p = purl, rem = remain(ing), rep = repeat, rs = right side, sl = slip, st(s) = stitch(es), tog = together, ws = wrong side, yf = yarn forward


Left front
Using 3.25mm needles cast on 18 sts. 1st Row: * k1, p1, rep from * to end. Rep last row 7 times more. Change to 4mm needles and proceed: 1st Row: K. 2nd Row: p1 * m1, p2 pass m1 over the previous p2, p2 rep from * to last st, p1. 3rd Row: K. 4th Row p1 *p2, m1, p2 pass m1 over the previous p2 rep from * to last st, p1. These four rows form the pattern. Continue in pattern until left front measures 13cms, ending with a rs row.

Shape Neck
Cast off 2 sts, p to end - 16 sts. Work 5 rows in st st dec 1 st at neck edge in next and every foll alt row - 13 sts. Work 7 rows in st st without shaping. >Cast off.

Right front
Using 3.25mm needles cast on 18 sts. 1st Row: * p1, k1, rep from * to end.
Rep last row 7 times more. Change to 4mm needles and proceed. 1st Row: K. 2nd Row: p1 * m1, p2 pass m1 over the previous p2, p2 rep from * to last st, p1.3rd Row: K. 4th Row p1 *p2, m1, p2 pass m1 over the previous p2 rep from * to last st, p1. These four rows form the pattern. Continue in pattern until right front measures 13cms, ending with a ws row.

Back

Change to 4mm needles and proceed. 1st Row: K. 2nd Row: p1 * m1, p2 pass m1 over the previous p2, p2 rep from * to last st, p2. 3rd Row: K. 4th Row p1 *p2, m1, p2 pass m1 over the previous p2 rep from * to last st, p1. These four rows form the pattern. Continue in pattern until back measures 13cms, ending with a rs row. >Work 13 rows in st st ending with ws row. Cast Off

Sleves - both alike
Using 3.25mm needles cast on 25 sts and work 7 rows in 1x1 rib. Next row: Rib 2, m1, (rib 5, m1) 4 times, rib to end -30 sts. Change to 4mm needles and working in pattern as given for Back, work 11 rows in pattern inc 1 st at end of 3rd and every foll 4th row, working inc sts into the pattern -36 (sts). Work 7 rows in st st without shaping. Cast Off.

Neckband
Join shoulder seams. With rs facing, using 3.25mm needles, pick up and knit 16 sts evenly along right side of neck, 14 sts across cast off sts at back of neck and 15 sts evenly along left side of neck. 45 sts. Next Row: K. Commencing with 2nd row 1 x 1 rib work 7 rows. Cast off in Rib.

Right front border
With rs facing, using 3.25mm needles, and commencing at lower edge of rib on Right Front pick up and knit 7 sts evenly along rib, 31 sts evenly along front edge to neckband and 7 sts evenly along neckband - 45 sts. Next Row: K. Next Row: Rib 4, cast off 2 sts, (rib 9, cast off 2 sts) 3 times, rib 2. Next Row: Rib 3, cast on 2 sts, (rib10, cast on 2 sts) 3 times, rib 4. Work 3 rows in rib. Cast off in rib.

Left front border
Work to match Right Front Border omitting buttonholes.

To make up Fold sleeves in half lengthways, then placing folds to shoulder seams, sew sleeves into position. Join side and sleeve seams. Sew on buttons. See ball band for pressing and care instructions.
