Pregnancy and Childbirth for Idiots (The First Weeks) …….cont. 2
Well now you’ve had your pregnancy confirmed by yourself, your GP and your Midwife, You have your green ante-natal notes and you’ve been advised to start taking ‘Folic Acid’ and that’s about it for another 4-6 weeks….. Here’s how to deal with all the awful bits that you’ve been left to deal with alone!
Morning Sickness
A very common one this, although not everyone gets it, in fact those that don’t may just consider themselves very lucky as if your going to get it, there’s nothing you could have done differently to avoid it!
• Try getting out of bed slowly in the morning (providing you have no other responsibilities whatsoever, otherwise you may have to set an alarm and get up 10 minutes before you normally do.)
• If you have a partner around that has even less to do than yourself, get him to bring you a cup of tea and a dry snack in the morning before you get out of bed (This means dry biscuit or toast….. so your probably getting out of bed yourself first then get yourself the dry toast and tea!!!)
• Eat Little and Often, In the Early days when you feel sick because your full, or you feel sick because your hungry, then this is probably the best way to go, it’s a way of tricking your body into thinking it’s just steady all day (if yours is up for being fooled that is!!!)
• Rest More, This is much like the first one really, If its possible for you to rest more then it would be wise for you to do so, as seems a little insane for you to be tired and deprive yourself sleep when there really is no reason for it!
• Ginger, many people swear by it, doesn’t work for everyone, but, when you feel that bad, it’s worth a try!!!
• ‘Seabands’, These are Acupressure bands that you put round each wrist, they are recommended for travel sickness and morning sickness.
Well that’s Just one small problem for the early weeks, you may be plagued by many other small niggling things that should stop bothering you as much by the second trimester, heres another thing for you to watch out for in the first trimester!!!
• Your Mood, This may or may not be a problem for you….. but lets face it, it’s not so much as your problem as everybody elses, but you may also feel overjoyed or very sad, just try to remember….it’s not your fault!!!
Heartburn and Indigestion.
• These may still with you for the whole time! Make a note to mention it to your midwife when you finally see her again and she will give you some antacids.
• Milk as this is an alkaline this normally works, especially if it’s only mild.
• Sleep sat up! Or least as upright as you can get whilst you sleep, this allows gravity to help you out as water cannot flow uphill, neither can stomach acid!
• Avoid hot food, spicy food or citrus fruits as these do not help heartburn!
